Growing up I always wondered how Germany fell to Hitler, after all they were intelligent good people. So when Trump started his campaign for president, it all seemed so similar to the reports I had read about Hitler- how he had been laughed at and no one ever thought he would ever be in a position of authority but he did, just like Trump did and just like Hitler did, Trump won with less than 30% of voters.
One thing that stood out to me when I studied that time of Hitler is that less than a third of the people were in thrall to Hitler- one third was active in their resistance but one third stayed quiet. That one third that stayed quiet actually allowed the atrocities to continue and for Hitler to succeed.
Now it seems like history is repeating itself and I ask myself are one third of our country going to stay quiet or will they join with the millions like myself to resist the danger that Trump represents?

The movie “The Sound of Music” may have seemed to be all about the Trapp Family Singers but the real story was about Georg Johannes Ritter von Trapp who refused to participate in Hitler’s goal of controlling the western world. I have met elderly people who told me that their families also resisted Hitler. America may be too diverse for a Trump dictatorship. The growing number of Republican senators who have begun speaking out against Trump could be the beginning of a flood of congressmen and senators who say “enough is enough.” If that flood does not materialize I will be part of the group leaving the USA.
Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona:
“If I have been critical, it’s not because I relish criticizing the behavior of the President of the United States,” Flake said. “If I have been critical, it is because I believe that it is my obligation to do so, as a matter of duty and conscience.”
He continued, “The notion that one should stay silent as the norms and values that keep America strong are undermined and as the alliances and agreements that ensure the stability of the entire world are routinely threatened by the level of thought that goes into 140 characters — the notion that one should say and do nothing in the face of such mercurial behavior is a historic and, I believe, profoundly misguided.”
Flake is not alone. Senators Bob Corker and John McCain have condemned the behavior of Trump and both Obama and George W. Bush have made major speeches condemning the philosophy of Trump.
